Recent weather fronts have brought more than just migratory birds to Venice, Louisiana. The redfish are belly-crawling and feeding heavily in shallow waters, while the trout are moving further upriver every day. It won’t be long before we start catching limits of redfish, speckled seatrout, and white trout near the launch.

For those wanting to fill the cooler, we anticipate catching easy limits inshore throughout the winter as long as the river water remains low. As we approach the new year, we look forward to the sheepshead moving inshore, and we expect to catch them in hundreds of pounds each day.
Nearshore, we’ve been catching red snapper consistently. However, the season is now closed, so we’re giving them a rest after a successful snapper season.
Tripletail fishing has been excellent around the nearshore oil rigs. Targeting them with live or artificial shrimp has proven to be the most effective method. Additionally, cobia have been caught at these same rigs using bucktails with large paddle-tail grubs. We’ve had the best results using 2-ounce bucktail jigs.
Offshore, it’s big yellowfin tuna season! This is the time of year when the yellowfin push into shallow areas and the lumps to feed on mullet and pogey schools. Expect to see plenty of 150-plus-pound fish caught regularly over the next couple of months. We have openings on both the Contender and the Freeman if you’re interested in landing a trophy yellowfin tuna.
